"Matthew Gelardi, Scientist,Dies"
Electronics Scientist Matthew Gelardi, and employee of the Control and Guidance Division, AEEL [Hard to read -ed], died unexpectedly Tuesday, February 4th. He was 53 years old.
A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Mr. Gelardi first came to the Philadelphia area in September 1942, while on active Navy Duty. After a year at the Naval Aircraft Factory and 2.5 years at NAMC, he was transferred to the Naval Aircraft Modification Unit, Johnsville as Leading Chief (Radar/Radio) in July, 1944.
He remained in this capacity until his discharge in early 1947. He liked the area so well that he returned shortly after his discharge in a civilian capacity, accepting a tempory [sic] appointment as a Laboratory Mechanic on Jan.20 1947.
Some six months later Mr. Gelardi was given a probationary appointment as an Electronics Engineer in the Electronics Section, Pilotless Aircraft Division.
On February 4, 1948 he shifted from the Pilotless Aircraft Development Lab. to AEEL, where he has been since with the exception of the period from October 5, 1950 to March 30, 1952, when he was recalled to active duty.
Before being called to active duty in May, 1941, Mr. Gelardi was employed for 7.5 years as a Radio and Sound Engineer, and 2.5 years prior to that as a test engineer, all in the Boston area.
He was a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers and the American Radio Relay League. Mr. Gelardi is survived by his wife, Carmen, of 2606 Horsham Road, Hatboro, Pennsylvania.
We of Mt. Airy V.H.F. Radio Club, will miss pleasant, quiet spoken Matt, and extend our sympathy to his family.
